History of the Muenster Diocese
The Muenster Diocese was formed on May 6, 1921. It had been part of the Prince Albert Diocese until that time.
The first Abbot-Ordinary was Abbot Michael Ott. He was
succeeded by Abbots-Ordinary Severin Gertken (1926), Jerome Weber
(1960), and then Peter Novecosky (1990).
The territory of the Muenster Diocese was originally settled
in 1903 by mainly German-speaking settlers from Minnesota who
established St. Peter's Colony. The colony was made up of 50 townships.
On September 14, 1998 the Muenster Diocese (St. Peter's Abbacy) was joined to the Saskatoon Diocese. St. Peter's Abbey thus
reverts to the status is had in 1921, namely as a regular Benedictine
Abbey. It becomes an abbey within the expanded Diocese of Saskatoon.
The Benedictine priests will continue to serve as pastors in the
majority of the neighbouring parishes.
